It comes down to solving why I lose sound if I plug in the microphone. All comments continue to be much appreciated.
I hope this offers a more complete explanation. Under the Output option it shows: Name = Headphones Type = Headphone Port BUT if I plug in my new microphone (it has a USB connector) I see another, second option which is Output Name:TONOT TC-1020 Audio Device and the Port is: USB. When I go to the Preferences>Sound function, the Input option (there's just one) looks like this: Input Name = Line In Type = Audio Lin-In Port. The actual stereo has a function whereby you can select to play the radio, CD's or something called "AUX" - which I select to get sound while using the computer. The unit is plugged into the "Audio Out" port in the back of the computer (a pin-type connector).
